Technical and operational due diligence for cultivated meat target

Project request

Our client, a leading investment fund, tasked us with performing technical and operational due diligence on a potential 8-figure EUR investment. The focus was on a cultivated meat target.

Over a period of four weeks, our consulting and expert team undertook a comprehensive technical and operational due diligence on the target, utilizing our established technical due diligence frameworks while customizing them to meet the specific needs of the investors and the circumstances of the target.

We performed a critical evaluation of all technological aspects of cultivated meat production and summarized them in a techno-economic analysis (TEA) with realistic assumptions. Additionally, our scalability and operational assessment pinpointed potential growth challenges and bottlenecks, for which we provided mitigation strategies to the investor.

Key components:

  • Technology evaluation: Examination of upstream and downstream process, cell lines, media etc. along with intellectual property and regulatory affairs.
  • TEA: Detailed techno-economic review of assumptions for the facility and realistic forecasts with industry benchmarks.
  • Partnership potential: Detailed overview of potential partnership companies that would best complement target’s abilities and deliver value to investor.
  • Operational assessment: Review of the target’s focus areas, organizational structure and scientific team to provide a recommendation on best path to commercialization.
  • Technical scalability: Analysis of the scalability of the production technology, including potential challenges and bottlenecks.

Our methodology

Our approach involved a project team comprised of one Project Manager, one consultant, and one Technical Lead, who tapped into our proprietary knowledge base and a vast network of over 2000 global experts. Through management interviews, a site visit and desk research, we were able to rigorously examine the data room.

We integrated classic due diligence practices and findings with extensive market insights and expertise from technical specialists, resulting in a detailed due diligence report and an executive summary for the Investment Committee.

Project deliverable

The project's results furnished the client with a detailed analysis of the investment opportunity and its associated risks. Our findings will guide the fund's decision-making process, as the investment is still under consideration.
